The Associated Students Board of Directors voted unanimously to adopt a resolution amending the corporate budget policy on Oct. 6.
The corporate budget policy is a set of financial, budget and governance policies that ASI must abide by due to its classification as a nonprofit organization operating as a Cal State Fullerton auxiliary organization, outlining applicable fees, budget guidelines and the budget timeline to more clearly define ASI’s financial processes for the executive senate budget.
Sponsored by Board of Directors Treasurer Manaswini Surusomayajula, this resolution came from the ASI Finance Committee.
Surusomayajula presented the policy changes to the board, stating that the updates are primarily administrative and do not affect the policy’s overall purpose.
“The proposed changes are primarily intended to update outdated references, clarify titles and processes and align the policy with the CSU system and ASI budgeting practices,” Surusomayajula said.
The revision matches internal policy terms to the current job titles used in ASI and effectively replaces guidance previously drawn from the Integrated CSU Administrative Manual, which is no longer in use.
Under the new processes for the fall semester schedule, student government entities would receive a budget orientation during an executive senate meeting, and must submit their budget proposals to the ASI president by the first Friday of December.
Entities that do not meet the December deadline will not receive any funding for the upcoming fiscal year.
“Under this process, student government entities would collaborate with their organizational advisors to prepare a budget proposal for the next fiscal year,” Surusomayajula said.
For the spring semester, the ASI president will present the budget assessment and recommendations to the ASI Finance Committee at the first meeting of the spring semester.
The treasurer will then draft the final budget in consultation with the Board of Directors chair, the chief financial officer, the vice president and the executive director.
The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing two key budgets: the primary ASI operational budget and the Titan Student Centers budget, which funds student facilities, including the Titan Student Union and the Titan Recreation Center.
Following the vote, ASI Executive Director Dave Edwards addressed the board to discuss broader budget overviews as a mid-semester conversation to preview the expected spring budget and emphasized that most of ASI’s revenue comes from mandatory student fees and the budget’s biggest expense is labor, including student and professional employment.
The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Oct. 20.
