BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Opening statements will be presented Monday in the trial of a couple charged with murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl in 2024.
Chandy McCarthy, the child’s mother, and Gregory MacDonald, her boyfriend, are having their cases heard separately, with opening statements in McCarthy’s trial beginning Monday morning while MacDonald’s trial starts at 1:30 p.m.

On Oct. 10, 2024, police were called to a home in the 300 block of Vernal Place in central Bakersfield to a report of a child in medical distress.
The girl was taken to Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She had bruising over much of her body, according to court filings.
Police say MacDonald abused the child for months and McCarthy knew about it, did nothing to stop him and “likely contributed.” MacDonald was previously arrested in Nevada on suspicion of harming the child, according to the filings.
