San Jose police shot and killed a suspect who they say flashed a gun at officers, the department said Monday.

The shooting happened late Sunday night along the 3000 block of Locke Drive in South San Jose, police said.

Officers opened fire after the suspect brandished a firearm at them, police said. The suspect died at the scene. Police have not disclosed why officers were initially responding to the area.

Neighbors who spoke to NBC Bay Area on Monday did not know what caused the confrontation, but said they saw a SWAT team and then heard gunshots. Some neighbors said the person who they believe was shot by police was someone who often acted erratically and would get upset when people came on his property.

Police have not confirmed any details about the suspect.

An investigation is ongoing and police may hold a news briefing on Tuesday to provide updates.
