COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — San Diego State’s Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) has been named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Month, the league announced Tuesday. It is the first career golfer of the month (or week) award for Kowack, who did earn MW Freshman of the Month honors in September 2022.

Kowack captured medalist honors in SDSU’s lone event in October at the Marquette Intercollegiate, sinking a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-5, 637-yard 18th hole to finish at 2-under 214, one shot ahead of Florida’s Jack Turner (-1). Kowack and Turner were the only two golfers out of the 90-man field to shoot under par on the par-72, 7,551-yard Erin Hills Golf Course, home of the men’s 2017 U.S. Open and the women’s 2025 U.S. Open. Kowack was at 1-over through his first seven holes, but he birdied four of the final 11 holes to finish with a 3-under 69. Turner shot a 68 in his final round.

It was the second career victory for Kowack, who led the Aztecs to a runner-up finish, beating the likes of No. 10 Florida and No. 16 Texas A&M. Kowack led the field in par-4 scoring (-3) and was tied for fifth in par-3 scoring (+1). His 14 birdies for the tournament matched Lequan Wang (UC Davis) for the most and he gained 2.93 strokes on the field.

Kowack averaged 73.22 over nine rounds in the fall, which ranked second on the team.

SDSU, which is ranked 29th in the latest computer rankings, kicks off its spring championship season, Jan. 26-28, at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, California.
