OAKLAND — A suspected member of a West Oakland gang has been charged with attempted murder of a local rapper who police say was known for taunting members of rival gangs.
Aries Campbell, 19, was charged in late August with five felonies, including attempted murder, unlawful firearm activity, and dissuading witnesses to the May 14 shooting. One of the men Campbell allegedly attempted to intimidate out of cooperating with police was the teen who allegedly drove him to and from the intersection where the shooting took place.
Campbell allegedly shot his victim around 5:15 p.m. on May 14, near 40th Street and Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. Authorities identified the victim as an Oakland rapper who goes back JuDown3X, and say he transported himself to a hospital and walked in for treatment of a gunshot wound, but didn’t identify his attacker.
The shooting was caught on surveillance footage and police used license plate readers to track the suspects’ vehicle, a Hyundai, as it travelled to Vallejo and then to Merced, according to court records. They arrested the suspected driver, a 19-year-old man, in Antioch last July, but he hasn’t been charged, court records show.
Campbell was arrested on Sept. 4 on the 800 block of Willow Street in Oakland, and is being held at Santa Rita Jail without bail. Police say he is a member of a gang based in Oakland’s Campbell Village apartments.
By contract, JuDown3X is known to associate with members of the West Oakland-based Ghost Town gang and has posted videos in the area taunting rivals, authorities allege. Some of those videos were shot in the Campbell Village gang’s territory.
Police reportedly installed a tracking device on the Hyundai in order to track down the suspected driver, who is also the vehicle’s registered owner. They say they also uncovered video from the 900 block of Willow Street, an alleged gang “stronghold,” where Campbell is seen getting into a passenger door of the Hyundai just minutes before the shooting, according to court records.
Campbell has pleaded not guilty and is next due in court on Dec. 1, records show.
