A 19-year-old driver died in a crash on Interstate 80 near Fairfield Tuesday night, and two California Highway Patrol officers investigating that crash were injured about an hour later when a Tesla hit their patrol car.

The first crash happened around 10:45 p.m. on eastbound I-80 west of Air Base Parkway.

CHP said a 19-year-old San Pablo man driving a Honda Civic lost control for an unknown reason and was then hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 47-year-old Sacramento man.

The Civic driver was taken to a hospital, where he died. CHP said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.

Around 11:45 p.m., four CHP officers were still investigating the crash with four lanes closed and traffic being diverted into the slow lane.

Investigators said a Tesla driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man went through a flare and cone pattern and hit a CHP Dodge Charger with two officers inside.

Both officers were taken to NorthBay Hospital in Fairfield and have since been released.

CHP said it is not yet known whether the Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature was active at the time of the crash.

All eastbound lanes reopened around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
