A formal ribbon cutting Thursday morning marked the completion of a renovation of West Sacramento’s Heritage Oaks Park.
A big part of the renovation was a dedicated theme to pay homage to tribal leaders throughout the region.
“It’s a huge deal,” said Kate Smith, West Sacramento’s Director of Parks & Recreation. “We worked with tribal representatives on this park.”
Wilton Rancheria, Yoche Dehe Wintun Nation and Shingle Springs Rancheria worked with the City.
The new theme includes an oak tree playground structure with a wise man’s face, a sleeping deer and a squirrel within the trunk of the structure.
A new, separate spray pad includes a canoe and teepee structure, as well as other tribal and wildlife figures.
There is also a BMX skills course crafted in a corner of the park, located at 1300 Lake Washington Boulevard.
In 2022, the California Department of Parks and Recreation awarded the city a $3 million Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to help pay for the nearly $8 million design and construction project.
The community is invited to a much larger celebration, Party in the Park, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
