The San Diego Wave have locked up one of their young stars with a new deal.

Midfielder Lia Godfrey and the Wave have agreed on a three-year contract extension that will keep her with the club through the 2029 season, the club announced Thursday. The 24-year-old had been playing under a two-year contract that she signed before this season.

Godfrey has scored six goals and recorded five assists in 27 matches (19 starts) this season. The Wave are 16-8-3, already owners of the best single-season mark in club history, heading into Saturday’s match against the North Carolina Courage (13-11-3) in Cary, N.C.

“Lia has made an immediate impact in her first professional season, demonstrating her ability to not only compete but excel at this level,” said Camille Ashton, the Wave’s general manager and sporting director. “She has been a key to our success this season, and we’re excited to continue supporting her development as she remains an important part of this club moving forward.”

A Florida native and former University of Virginia All-American, Godfrey ranks second among NWSL rookies in goals and is one of just five rookies in league history to record at least five assists in a season.

Godfrey’s most recent goal, against the Orlando Pride on Oct. 2, led San Diego to a 2-1 win that helped the club secure a playoff berth. The NWSL postseason begins Nov. 6.
