San Jose Sharks News & Notes

San Jose placed forward Alex Barré-Boulet on waivers on Oct. 14 with the intention of assigning him to the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. Barré-Boulet signed a two-year, two-way deal with the Sharks and was limited in the preseason by an injury that landed him on injured reserve. He put up 70 points in 70 games last season, second in AHL scoring, with 26 goals and 44 assists, and added 12 points in 17 playoff games. He has 19 points in 72 career NHL games with four teams.

The Sharks picked up another shootout win on Thursday 3-2 over the Predators. All four of San Jose’s wins have come via the shootout or overtime. The Sharks blew a two goal lead which led to the game going to overtime and a shootout. Macklin Celebrini scored the loan goal in the shootout to pick up the second point.

Detroit Red Wings News & Notes

Detroit picked up their second win over the season with a 2-1 victory over the Flyers on Thursday. Anton Johansson scored his first career NHL goal and Andrew Copp scored the game winner with four minutes left in the game. Daniil Tarasov got the win, his first as a Red Wing stopping 17 of the 18 shots he faced. Tarasov in two games leads the league in goals-against and save percentage. He has a 0.79 goals-against average and a .965 save percentage.

Two contract situations remain open. Simon Edvinsson is unsigned, with reports that his camp is seeking north of $12 million annually, while the Dylan Larkin saga continues without resolution. In Edvinsson’s absence, Albert Johansson has paired with Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot has been steady. Detroit’s second line of Emmitt Finnie between DeBrincat and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard has carried the offense, while the top line of Victor Arvidsson, Larkin and Lucas Raymond has produced little. Marco Kasper remains out without a clear timeline, leaving the bottom six thin.

Players To Watch

Will Smith — San Jose Sharks

Smith scored and fired five shots in 19:48 last time out, and he’s San Jose’s most productive forward by the underlying numbers. Box Score Junkie has him at 51.3% Corsi-for with 54.8 shot attempts for per 60 this season, and three goals on 1.8 expected — he’s finishing above his chances, so the shots-on-goal prop is live.

Alex DeBrincat — Detroit Red Wings

Box Score Junkie’s 2026-27 figures have DeBrincat driving play as well as anyone in this game: 61.9% Corsi-for, 73.6 shot attempts for per 60 and 3.7 high-danger expected goals generated with him on the ice. Four goals on 3.8 expected means the production is earned, not luck. Against San Jose’s leaky blue line, he’s the one to watch.
