SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — The City of San Jose says they’re ready for this season’s expected “Super El Niño” — high wind and rain to batter the area that creates major flooding.

San Jose gave a tour of its emergency operations center to showcase how the city is preparing, reassuring residents that no matter how bad the storm, they’re ready to weather it.

San Jose Office of Emergency Management Director Ray Riordan said crews and resources are ready as they brace for a harsh El Niño season this winter.

“San Jose is ready to serve its residents before disaster strikes. When the city and our partners and our residents are all prepared together, our whole community is safer. Over 85% of our city staff have completed their training to be effective as disaster service workers,” Riordan said.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said between the state-of-the-art center, sewage vacuum and evacuation loudspeakers, the city is ready to help residents caught in crisis.

“We really believe in investing as much as we possibly can and prevention to avoid any downstream impacts. We’re not perfect… But we’re investing heavily, as we always do, in partnership with others,” said Mahan.

Community emergency response team coordinator, Lee Steckmest, said to be prepared yourself and check your home for any flooding risks.

“Clean your gutters and drains, inspect your roof, seal gaps where water can possibly come in, and more importantly, ensure trees have been trimmed and properly maintained. As you’ve heard, a little preparation can make a big difference when the storm hits,” said Steckmest.

El Niño will ramp up for the Bay Area into December, but KRON4 meteorologists said we could continue to see rain into the spring months.
