Ask everyone in Hollywood what the future of filmmaking looks like, and you’ll never get the same answer twice. The industry landscape seems to shift on a daily basis, with new business models, distribution methods, production tools, and even entire formats emerging every day.
But even if there’s no definitive answer, attendees at IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit received the best look into the current state of the industry that you could possibly ask for. A wide range of filmmakers, executives, and other Hollywood decision makers gathered on the event deck of Penske Media’s Los Angeles headquarters for a full day of programming that covered the changing industry from every angle. The conversations included detailed breakdowns of 2026’s biggest films, early looks at major 2027 projects, and honest dialogue about what really goes into finding, making, and marketing a hit in the current landscape.
The day kicked off with a keynote presentation from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who explained the challenges that went into their Amazon MGM blockbuster “Project Hail Mary.” Then Bill Hader dropped by for a one-on-one conversation about what he learned from directing his upcoming feature debut, “They Know.” Our “Pitch Me” panel saw a team of executives from every step in the development process explain what goes into a breakout hit — and then audiences got a close look at two of the biggest ones from 2026, “Buddy” and “Obsession.”
Other discussions included a deep dive into the future of microdramas with executives from Issa Rae’s Hoorae Media, a fireside conversation with “The Hunger Games” and “Love Story” producer Nina Jacobson, and a look at how presenting sponsor AT&T is helping to empower filmmakers.
The festivities didn’t end with the program, as attendees stayed for a networking reception presented by The New York Festivals TV & Film Awards, an international competition founded in 1957 that honors global storytelling and excellence across television and film. For more information visit here.
