San Diego State starting quarterback Jayden Denegal was listed as questionable Wednesday night on the initial Pac-12 availability report for Saturday afternoon’s game at Colorado State.

Questionable is one of four categories on the availability report and equates to a 50/50 chance of playing. SDSU coach Sean Lewis said after Wednesday morning’s practice that “it will be a true game-time decision” on whether Denegal plays against the Rams.

Denegal was injured in the second quarter of last weekend’s win over Fresno State. He limped off the field with an apparent right knee injury and was replaced by backup quarterback Stone Saunders. All first-team reps in practice Tuesday and Wednesday were taken by Saunders while Denegal watched from the sideline.

Denegal is not wearing a knee brace in practice, but has continued to limp and move gingerly.

“He is limited,” Lewis said.

Saunders was listed as questionable on last week’s initial availability report. The redshirt freshman was listed probable on Wednesday night’s report.

Lewis said he would expect “the presnap mechanics will be cleaner” for Saunders if he were to make his first career start.

Saunders fumbled his first snap last weekend, then went on to complete 6 of 11 passes for 61 yards, guiding two fourth-quarter scoring drives in a 26-23 comeback win.

“I thought his decision-making was pretty decisive,” Lewis said, “so I would like that to grow and develop. I’d like to see ball placement continue to grow and relationship with receivers will get better as we go as well.”

Four starters on the offensive line were listed as questionable — left tackle Joe Borjon, left guard Kalan Ellis, center Isaac Lucas and right guard Mikey Watkins.

Running backs Lucky Sutton and Javion Kinnard also were also listed as questionable, along with starting linebacker Tano Letuli, edge Kai Wallin and defensive tackle Malachi Finau.

Colorado State listed three dozen players on its initial availability report, although the status category was not included for any of the Rams’ players.

The availability report is posted nightly in the three days leading up to a game. A final report is posted two hours before kickoff.
