FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Getting your home ready for the winter goes beyond holiday decor.
As temperatures dip, winterizing your plants can protect your yard investment.
“In the long run, it’s going to save you some money, as opposed to repurchasing the plant that you’ve already invested in,” says Ace Hardware Assistant Merchandising Manager, Diana Valle. “You’re able to keep it going throughout the year, save some money and keep it in your pocket.”

Valle says to start by identifying which plants need to be protected from frost.
“Buds starting to bloom, buds that are tighter, you want to protect those so you can get the color that you’re needing when you’re out in the yard,” she said. “We do carry frost blankets and shrub covers, so if your plan is not acclimated to the area where you have it, we do carry those in store.”
If you’re able to, move a plant inside, under a patio or against a wall. An old sheet can do the trick as well.
As for preserving moisture when we’re watering less…
“We do carry mulch,” Valle said. “You put it down on your surface, on top of your plant, nothing too heavy so when you water, you do less of the watering,” Valle said. “It’s getting that deep root watering it needs during the cold time.”
Valle says don’t think decorations are the only thing that will give your yard a pop of color. The Ace Hardware in northeast Fresno offers a variety of plants that can withstand cooler temperatures.
“Chrysanthemums, primrose and cyclamen are perfect for the colder weather,” she said. “You might have to lightly cover them if they’re in the ground.”
