An underground fire near the Tenderloin and Civic Center neighborhoods caused a power outage on Wednesday evening that left nearly 2,800 customers without electricity, authorities said.
The San Francisco Fire Department said it responded to a vault fire near Van Ness Avenue and Bush Street at about 7:45 p.m. SFFD said fire crews extinguished the blaze, but smoke may still be visible in the area.
The fire triggered a power outage in the Tenderloin between Geary Boulevard and McAllister Street as well as a portion of the Civic Center, according to the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. outage tracker. Approximately 2,775 customers were without power as of 8 p.m.
Authorities said PG&E crews were at the scene of the fire.
PG&E initially estimated power would be restored between 12:30 a.m. and 1:15 a.m., but most customers in the area had electricity back by about 9:15 p.m., utility spokesperson Edgar Hopida said.
No injuries were reported.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency rerouted impacted Muni buses, as some roads in the area remain blocked by emergency vehicles, the agency announced.
