SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Brown men’s water polo team (17-6, 3-2 NWPC) took a first-quarter lead over No. 19 San Jose State, but ultimately fell 18-13 in the opening day of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
Roland Csendes opened up the scoring early for the Bears, recording four goals in the first quarter. Jaxson Tierney and Trey Rogers each scored a goal in the opening eight minutes, as Brown took a 6-4 lead headed into the second quarter. While Ramzi Megali and Tierney each found the back of the net in the second, it wasn’t enough against San Jose’s six goals, as they took the lead to close out the first half.
In an evenly matched third quarter, Máté Tymcyna, Griffin Tunney, and Mac Berry responded with one goal apiece after San Jose found three quick goals to open the quarter. Entering the final quarter trailing by three, Tymcyna scored his second of the game, but it wasn’t enough against San Jose’s four. William Vranesh scored in the final minutes for the Bears, who ultimately fell to the Spartans 18-13.
Brown will continue at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament on Saturday (Oct. 24) against No. 19 Santa Clara at 12 p.m. ET (9 a.m. PT) and No. 16 Pepperdine at 5:20 p.m. ET (2:20 p.m. PT).
