Sac Metro Fire had initially responded to the home for a medical aid call after 67-year-old Wendell Celestine reported locating his girlfriend unconscious. His girlfriend, a 56-year-old woman, had previously been married to Celestine and divorced, but started dating again, officials said.
Fire personnel arrived on the scene to find that the victim had signs of trauma, as well as broken glass and damaged furniture at the residence. Officials said that the damage was consistent with a possible physical altercation.
When deputies arrived, they detained Celestine, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. After investigation from homicide detectives and crime scene investigators, Celestine was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a charge of murder, officials said.
