A man has died following an assault Saturday evening near the state Capitol in downtown Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Officer Grace Weaver, a department spokesperson, said officers responded just before 6:15 p.m. Saturday to the 1100 block of 9th Street after receiving reports of an assault.
Officers found an unconscious adult man who was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts, the man was later pronounced dead, Weaver said.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to take over the investigation. Investigators processed the scene, canvassed the surrounding area and interviewed witnesses, Weaver said.
The 41-year-old suspect, identified as Manuel Rivas of Sacramento, was located and detained, according to Weaver. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on homicide charges related to the incident and is being held without bail.
