Fresno City Council candidate Naindeep Singh was arrested for a drug-related DUI, a law enforcement source told The Sun.

City Attorney Andrew Janz confirmed the arrest to independent reporter David Taub.

The big picture: Singh was arrested in the Tower District in the late hours of Saturday or early Sunday.

Janz confirmed that Singh was arrested for driving under the influence of a substance and taken to Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno for blood testing.

Singh was released to a family member and not booked into the county jail.

Taub reported that Singh is still awaiting the test results, as of Sunday night.

What they’re saying: “I can confirm at this time that my office has been notified that a Naindeep Chann Singh was arrested and taken into custody for driving under the influence of a substance last night near the Tower District. He was transported to a local hospital for testing. I will defer all further questions to Fresno Police who are investigating this alleged offense,” Janz told Taub.

The Fresno Police Department did not respond to a request for comment from The Sun.

State of the race: Singh is running for the city council in district 1 against State Center Community College District Trustee Rob Fuentes.

Singh, a Central Unified School District Trustee, secured the most votes in the June primary at 38.69% and advanced to the November runoff along with Fuentes, who had 36.52% of the vote.
