BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Kern County experienced its first major storm of the season on Tuesday morning, bringing heavy rain, wind, and flooding to several areas. In Frazier Park, residents reported snow, while flooding was observed near Beach Park, causing some drivers to navigate high waters or turn around. A car was stalled at an intersection, and multiple dog parks were submerged.
The storm led to power outages, with more than 1,000 customers affected at its peak, according to the PG&E website. Power was later restored for some. Jorge Toro of the Bakersfield California Highway Patrol described it as a “very busy morning,” with officers responding to multiple crashes, including a box truck rollover at Pond Road and Wildwood.
Flooding on the 99 Freeway caused heavy traffic, particularly at two known hotspots: northbound 99 around Palm and south of California. Officer Toro explained, “We get a lot of debris that builds up over the summer that blocks the drains and causes a little bit of flooding.” Caltrans cleared the flooding by 9:30 a.m.
Additionally, rocks fell near the mouth of the canyon on Highway 178, prompting traffic control while Caltrans cleared the roadway. Officer Toro praised their efforts, saying, “They used bulldozers and they managed that scene quite well and cleared the roadway efficiently.” He advised drivers to slow down and allow extra travel time during rainy conditions.
