A father was killed early Monday while stopping to help his daughter fix car troubles on northbound I-15 near State Route 52, according to California Highway Patrol.

The deadly 3:30 a.m. crash, which led to several other crashes, created hours of traffic delays on the freeway just north of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Traffic delays were reported in southbound lanes and on connecting freeways until all northbound lanes were reopened around 8:45 a.m.

CHP said the man who was killed was called to the scene by his daughter after her vehicle developed a mechanical issue, possibly a flat tire, while her two children were in the car. The father stopped his vehicle near his daughter’s, alongside the center divide, and was broadsided.

“He responded to the scene to assist. We don’t know what happened when he got here, but at some point he seems to have been broadsided on the driver’s side of the minivan by the Toyota Corolla,” CHP Sgt. Ray Scheindes said.

The father, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash caused a chain reaction and two other vehicles later became involved, CHP said. Two people were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The daughter and her two children were not injured.

The investigation into the crash shut down northbound

Traffic was diverted to State Route 52 as crews worked to clear the scene. Lanes were reopened around 8:45 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been factors.
