A mix of newcomers and returners from last year’s titlist team allowed Birmingham Seaholm to capture another Division 2 state championship Saturday in Midland.

The Maples’ success, particularly in doubles, allowed them to accumulate 35 points, enough to hold off their next-best competition in Midland Dow (25), who beat them out for the title in 2023 and tied for second with Seaholm in 2024. Forest Hills Northern closely followed with 24 points and Byron Center took fourth with 20.

All but one of the doubles’ flights belonged to Seaholm, and the one that didn’t (senior Aaryan Senthilvanan and freshman Mark Latinsky) still went to three sets in the semifinals of the third flight. That’s a contrast to last fall when Britton Leon and Alex Ting won No. 1 doubles but no other Seaholm pair made a final.

The doubles domination was led by top-flight duo Kalil Wahab and Hunter Helfman. They dropped just three games total on their march to the final, where they were victorious over Brody and Brayden Slot of Byron Center 7-6 (1), 6-4.

Ahren Gupta and Kyle Carr were the second-seeded team in No. 2 doubles and beat the 3-seeded team from Byron Center to reach the championship. There, they battled back after losing the opening set to Midland Dow’s favored duo of Ethan Clark and Jashwanth Thamminana, beating the Chargers in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

BOYS TENNIS STATE ROUNDUP: Troy repeats as D1 winner; Country Day edges out Cranbrook for D3 title

The No. 1-seeded team in four doubles, Seaholm’s Deven Madhwar and Ryan McArdle didn’t drop a set on their way to winning that flight, including a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the final against Byron Center’s Colten King and Jonah Wiechertjes.

It was nearly an all-Oakland County invitational in the top flight of singles. A runner-up state champion his freshman and junior years, South Lyon East senior Mason Crosby dispatched Grosse Pointe South’s Matthew Bartoszewicz 6-1, 6-1 in one matchup, and Seaholm’s Carter Griffith advanced past Evan Weber of Berkley 6-2, 6-0 in the other. In the end, Crosby got his title, beating Griffith 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

Meanwhile, Charlie Griffith would not be denied in No. 3 singles. The defending champ at that flight, Griffith had his work cut out of him and toppled Sam Ogilvie of Forest Hills Northern in the semis before meeting Dow’s Raymond Chai, the only other player seeded better than him, in the championship. Griffith required three sets but the sophomore made it 2-for-2 by beating Chai 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

Seaholm’s other title in singles came by way of freshman Luke Janz. The top-seeded Janz eliminated Shane Goldman of rival Groves 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal, then beat Forest Hills Northern’s Jayden Qi (who had defeated SL East’s Caden Crosby in his semifinal), by a score of 6-4, 7-5 in the title match to win the No. 4 flight.

Eventual champion Andrew Yang beat Giorgio Materazzo of Seaholm 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals of No. 2 singles.

South Lyon East took sixth place with 13 points, immediately trailed by Groves with 12, and Berkley came ninth with 10. Walled Lake Central and Milford finished tied for 14th place with three points.

The Maples had previously come runner-up or tied for second on five occasions prior to breaking through and winning in 2025.

Seaholm head coach Nick Shaheen had his finger on the pulse back in mid-September when talking about who might be his team’s biggest obstacles to a repeat. “If you were to ask me to pin down the ones we’re really worried about, I’d say Forest Hills Northern and Dow,” he said following a dual meet with Novi. “We feel confident if we play the Seaholm way, we’ll have similar success to last year.”

DIVISION 4

Jackson Lumen Christi and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett came in ranked 1-2 in the D4 polls, and that’s almost exactly where they finished in the finals, which concluded Thursday, Oct. 22 in Midland.

The Titans won with 24 points, while Liggett ended up tying for second with Ludington as both teams ended with 20. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep concluded with seven points, good for 14th place.

In No. 1 singles, 6-seed Rocco Wisniewski beat Ludingtons Ryan Higey in the second round, but Wisniewski lost in three sets to Grosse Ile’s Jack Johnson 5-7, 7-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Also from the Irish, unseeded senior Josh Powers beat Grosse Ile junior Dominic Naso in straight sets before losing to eventual No. 2 singles finalist Edwin Seo in the quarterfinals.
