Ron EdensSACRAMENTO, Calif. —

People gathered at Bueno Café in downtown Sacramento on Tuesday honored pets who have passed away as part of a Día de los Muertos tradition.

While the official Día de los Muertos begins on November 1, October 27 is traditionally the day to honor beloved pets who have passed. Organizers said pets are often considered family members.

“They are close to us, they often time heal us, and on our toes taking them outside and feeding them and all that stuff. We miss them when they’re gone because they’re family,” said Teresa Gutierrez, artist and organizer.

The ofrenda for the event featured traditional marigolds, as well as pet snacks and squeaky toys.
