VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Cutter Gauthier’s red-hot scoring run has resulted in a franchise record.
Gauthier scored a hat trick for the second game in a row, and the Ducks held on for a 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. The 22-year-old is the first player in Ducks history with back-to-back three-goal games and now has eight goals in his last three games after going the previous nine without finding the net.
“Kind of surprised some of those other legends before me haven’t done that with how good they were, and obviously a really special moment, but really happy we got the two wins and we can keep this thing going,” Gauthier told NHL.com.
Gauthier, who scored three goals in the Ducks’ 6-3 comeback victory over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, is the first player in NHL history to record multiple power-play goals in three consecutive games and joined Paul Kariya (2000-01) as the only Ducks player with multiple goals in three consecutive games.
“Something you definitely dream of as a kid,” Gauthier told NHL.com of being linked to Kariya. “Very blessed to be in this position.”
Mikael Granlund added a goal and two assists for the Ducks in the opener of their three-game Canadian trip. Leo Carlsson put away a short-handed tally and Beckett Sennecke had a career-high four assists as the Ducks improved to 3-1-1 in their past five games.
All four of Sennecke’s assists were primary, including the passes that led to all three Gauthier goals.
“When you have someone with probably one of the best shots that I’ve skated with, the best shot I’ve ever seen in my life, you try and get him the puck when he has time and space in the slot,” Sennecke told NHL.com. “And (he) kind of showed today what he can do with the puck when he shoots it.”
Laurent Brossoit made 19 saves in his second straight start for the Ducks after being called up from their AHL affiliate in San Diego on Saturday. After more than two years without an NHL win while battling assorted lower-body injuries, Brossoit has victories in his first two starts with the Ducks, with this one coming in front of family and friends in his offseason hometown.
“It’s obviously very, very special,” Brossoit told NHL.com.
The Ducks came into the game with the league’s second-best power play (34%) behind only the Utah Mammoth and went 3 for 3 with the man advantage. Two of Gauthier’s goals came on the power play, and the Ducks have 10 power-play goals on 12 chances over their past three games.
The Canucks got two goals from Jake DeBrusk, and one each from Liam Ohgren and Linus Karlsson. Elias Pettersson notched a pair of assists and goalie Kevin Lankinen made 17 saves for Vancouver, which is 1-12-1 in its past 14 games. The Canucks’ only win during that span came against the Ducks on Oct. 27, when the hosts blew a 5-2 third-period lead and lost, 6-5, in overtime.
The Ducks took a 5-2 lead at 4:11 of the third period in the rematch when Gauthier completed his third NHL hat trick, scoring with a wrist shot from above the right hashmarks off a rush.
DeBrusk scored with a backhand from in close on a power play to cut it to 5-3 at 5:30, and he then scored with a deflection at 9:34 to slice Vancouver’s deficit to one.
With the memory of how their previous meeting played out, Ducks coach Joel Quenneville called a timeout following DeBrusk’s second goal.
“We’ve been in a couple situations like that so far this year, and guys get a little hesitant, not trusting their instincts in high-pressure moments like that, so ‘Q’ told us all to just simplify our game, calm down, relax, play a simple brand, play a hard brand,” Gauthier told NHL.com.
Early in the game, Granlund scored from the left hashmarks, one-timing a pass from Sennecke between Lankinen’s pads while on a power play for a 1-0 lead at 4:04 of the first period.
“As a group, every time we go out there, we think we’re going to score,” Sennecke said. “We’re rolling pretty hot right now.”
The Canucks were on a power play two minutes later when Ohgren scored during a scramble in front of the crease to tie it 1-1 at 6:04 of the opening frame.
Gauthier scored again on a power play, hitting the net with a one-timer from the left circle to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead at 17:07 of the opening frame.
Carlsson scored on a short-handed 2-on-1 rush to make it 3-1 at 2:58 of the second period.
Karlsson waited out Brossoit before scoring from a sharp angle to cut the gap to 3-2 at 8:17 of the second.
The Ducks were back on a power play when Gauthier scored with another well-placed one-timer from the left circle over Lankinen’s glove to make it 4-2 at 18:25 of the second. Six of Gauthier’s past eight goals have come on the power play, and he holds the NHL lead with eight power-play goals this season.
“We have a lot of high-level guys who have a lot of poise and are able to see plays a step ahead of the game, and our power-play (and assistant) coach Jay Woodcroft has done an amazing job identifying a ‘PK’s’ weaknesses before games and giving us a good pre-scout of knowing how to hit them,” Gauthier told NHL.com. “And we’ve done a really good job at exposing them.”
The only other NHL player with back-to-back hat tricks this season is the Florida Panthers’ Brady Tkachuk.
