Coronado police were investigating a stabbing involving two students at the middle school on Tuesday morning, according to investigators

According to CPD, the incident occurred at 10:20 a.m. at the educational campus on F Avenue. School officials said in a post on social media that one of the students was hospitalized after the attack.

Multiple students, who were with their parents when NBC 7 spoke with them, said a boy stabbed a girl in the library. CPD said the boy used a pocket knife in the attack. One of the middle-schoolers said he witnessed the incident and that the girl was on the ground screaming afterward and tried to run away. The witness also said that he thought the victim and her attacker were friends and was not sure why the attack occurred.

Later in the day, Coronado schools released a statement confirming many details, and adding some information, including the fact that both children are seventh-graders. They also said the girl had been stabbed twice and was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Police said that both students involved were located after their arrival and that there “is no active threat to students or staff at this time.” Investigators also said the boy was taken into custody by police. It’s not yet known what charges he will face.

While the school was not locked down, officer did conduct a security sweep of the campus out of an abundance of caution. Childen were held in their homerooms for a period as police investigated, and multiple parents arrived at the school to take their kids out early.

The victim’s condition is not known at this time.
