The San Jose Giants should be a fun team to watch again in 2027. There might be another reason, as the SF Giants’ Low-A affiliate announced that its alternate identity will be the Silicon Valley Space Unicorns.

The name is to honor the history of Silicon Valley, which has been a place for space observation. San Jose will wear the uniforms for five games next season.

At this point, the MLB 2027 season is an unknown. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expires on December 1, and it is unlikely that a new one will be in place before then.

The owners and players’ union have not made enough progress to avoid another lockout. The negotiations have been conducted separately and through the media, so until both sides meet in person, progress will be slowed.

SF Giants’ Low-A identity continues trend for minor league teams having the best names in sports

The lockout could range from just a quiet offseason to a consolidated spring training to missing games in 2027. Canceling next season is an option, too, but it is hard to believe that either side benefits from this outcome.

The MLB season is an unknown, but the minor league season will continue as planned. San Jose has been one of the best affiliates in the minors over the past couple of years. This includes winning the California League championship in 2025, followed by reaching the Championship Series this past season.

Next year’s club should feature some of the best prospects in the organization. Josuar Gonzalez and Luis Hernández reached that level at the end of the season. While Hernández finished the year on the injured list, Gonzalez proved to be one of the most dynamic prospects in baseball.

Hernández will likely begin next season at Low-A. That said, Gonzalez performed well enough in the California League to move up to High-A to start next season. Minor league spring training will dictate a lot of that conversation.

On the pitching side, Jackson Flora has likely already advanced beyond that level. However, Carson Bolemon and Kaden Waechter, both of whom were drafted in 2026, could begin next year with San Jose.

When the season does begin, San Jose will have a fun, alternate identity. This is another good reminder that minor league team names are often the best in sports.
