A 33-year-old Fresno man died Friday morning when the motorcycle he was riding overturned while splitting lanes on Highway 99 in Madera County, ejecting him and his passenger onto the roadway. The woman riding with him suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, while he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to YourCentralValley.com, the driver lost control as he attempted to split lanes, causing the motorcycle to overturn and throw both riders onto the highway. The outlet reported that the man, identified only as a 33-year-old from Fresno, died at the scene while his passenger was transported to the hospital with major injuries. The driver’s identity had not been released as of Friday.

The crash happened along southbound Highway 99 south of Avenue 24 1/2 just after 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, per ABC30, which reported that both the man and woman were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. The station also noted a key unresolved detail: officers were initially called out for a motorcycle crash involving a semi-truck, but it remains unknown whether a truck was actually involved. That account differs from YourCentralValley’s description of the wreck as a crash between two semis, a discrepancy that has not been resolved by either outlet.

Highway Closure Backs Up Traffic for Miles

The crash forced a lengthy closure of Highway 99 near Avenue 24 1/2, according to GV Wire, which reported that Caltrans confirmed the collision backed up traffic for several miles. The agency urged drivers to avoid the area if possible and said it could not estimate when the highway would reopen, the outlet reported.

The Fresno motorcyclist’s death is the latest in a string of fatal motorcycle wrecks on Madera County roadways over the past year. Last December, two people died on Highway 99 in Madera after a Honda veered into the path of a semi-truck, according to BakersfieldNow; the truck driver was not hurt in that crash. In June, 42-year-old Davinder Singh Nagra of Fresno was killed when his motorcycle left the roadway in a separate solo crash, the Fresno Bee reported at the time. Another Madera County rider died in a head-on collision with a vehicle on a Friday evening, per a separate YourCentralValley report.

What Remains Unknown

Friday’s crash remains under investigation, and several core details have yet to be made public. The identity of the man who died has not been released, and no information on the passenger’s name, age or current condition beyond her reported major injuries has surfaced. Whether a semi-truck was actually involved in the collision also remains unconfirmed, with the two local outlets offering conflicting accounts of the circumstances.
