Fire-stricken neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area are preparing for the threat of mudslides from potentially record-breaking rains expected to arrive late Friday night.

The rains are part of an atmospheric river streaming in from the Pacific Ocean. The large weather system has already dumped significant rain north of Los Angeles. By midday Saturday, 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) could fall across the city, including areas that have suffered damaging fires in the past year and may be resistant to soaking up rain.
