Long Beach police detectives Friday were the death of a woman whose body was found inside a vehicle being driven by her boyfriend in Mexico.
The death occurred Saturday, and investigators were trying to determine if it occurred in Long Beach.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that a male adult suspect and female adult victim were involved in a domestic dispute while inside of a vehicle in the city of Long Beach,” according to a Long Beach Police Department statement.
“The dispute resulted in her death and the suspect is believed to have driven from Long Beach to Tijuana, Mexico, where he turned himself in to Mexican authorities,” police claimed.
The suspect, identified as Erik Alcantar, 44, of Long Beach, was arrested in Tijuana on Sunday.
The victim was identified as Aracely Romero, also of Long Beach.
Police said the two had been dating, but did not provide the length of time of their relationship or whether they were sharing a residence.
According to a GoFundMe post, Romero was the mother of the couple’s five children, who are between the ages of 16 and 26.
Detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.
As of Friday morning, it was unclear if Alcantar had been returned to the U.S. His name turned up no record on the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Inmate Information Center.
