Patches of wet weather haven’t been able to put a damper on the fun activities taking place in San Francisco.
Here are 18 events to check out this week in The City.
Chess night at Barebottle Brewing Company (Monday)
Every Monday, the Bernal Chess Club hosts casual games for players of all levels and ages at this Bernal Heights brewery. Rounds last from 5 to 8 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring chess sets if they have them. Barebottle Brewing is located at 1525 Cortland Ave.
Sunset Commons block party (Tuesday)
The Inner Sunset art cafe founded by Carmen and Steven Lee hosts a craft workshop at which participants can learn the art of block printing. Attendees will leave with block-printed cards and carved printing blocks that can be reused for future projects.

Tickets for the event, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m., can be purchased online. A general admission option costs $65, while a special discount gets two individuals in for $36.52 with fees. Sunset Commons is located at 1600 Irving St.
Nina Schuyler in conversation with Frances Dinkelspiel (Tuesday)
Author Nina Schuyler will speak about “Afterword,” her fictional novel that deals with the topics of love and artificial intelligence, with journalist Frances Dinkelspiel, the founder of Berkeleyside.
The admission-free event, which is being held from 6 to 7 p.m., takes place at the Main Library’s Koret Auditorium. After the conversation, attendees will be able to get their questions answered and copies of Schuyler’s book signed.
San Francisco Amateur Astronomers lecture (Wednesday)
The San Francisco Amateur Astronomers hosts member Robert Douglas, who will discuss his 2022 work “The (not so) Little Book of Astronomical Curiosities and Explanations of Celestial Phenomena.” The 250-page book covers the science of astronomy and how it has influenced humanity.
The admission-free event, which is open to the public, will be held at the Randall Museum from 7 to 9 p.m.
Cirque du Soleil opening night at Oracle Park (Thursday)
The traveling theatrical circus group is coming to San Francisco’s waterfront for “Echo,” a show that follows a young woman while exploring people’s bonds with nature and animals. Organizers say this is the first Cirque du Soleil show to feature live vocalists, as six entertainers will sing and play instruments.
The Pancakes and Booze Art Show (Thursday)
The art gallery and night club Public Works in the Mission district brings together more than 90 artists who will be exhibiting more than 750 pieces. Guests who attend the pop-up underground art show can dine on all-you-can-eat pancakes while listening to live performances from DJs and music producers.
Ocean Avenue Block Party (Friday)
A parking lot at the intersection of Ocean and Faxon avenues hosts a free, all-ages party featuring musical acts, DJs, food and beverage vendors, a craft market and family-friendly games.
Mechanics’ Institute film screening and concert (Friday)
The Post Street library and event center celebrates its Silent Film Month with a screening of “Girl Shy,” Harold Lloyd’s 1941 romantic comedy. Prior to the film screening, Robert Mailer Anderson will perform a 60-minute gramophone concert, complete with commentary from the Grammy Award-nominated producer.

Tickets can be purchased online, ranging in price from $7.18 with fees for library members to $12.51 with fees for nonmembers. The event, which takes place at 57 Post St., will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
Cultural healing night presented by KALW (Friday)
The San Francisco public radio station and Frida People, an Oakland art collective, are hosting an evening filled with conversation, art and music. Six musical acts will perform as part of the event, which is being hosted at KALW’s 220 Montgomery St. space.

‘Fall of Freedom’ presented by Green Apple Books on the Park (Friday)
The bookstore’s 9th Avenue location joins a nationwide movement in which art-community members are encouraged to host gatherings promoting creative expression. Green Apple’s event features donation-based tarot readings, artisanal soaps, a pop-up centered on zines and a canned-food drive for the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
RAWdance performances (Friday-Saturday)
Five Bay Area choreographers working with the Civic Center dance company will share works-in-progress and other pieces that have been reworked to accommodate intimate venues. Shows take place in the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center’s Green Room.

Pay-what-you-can tickets can be purchased online, ranging in price from $5 to $100. Friday’s show takes place from 8 to 9 p.m, while Saturday’s hourlong performances occur at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
‘Henry IV: Part 1’ presented by Bard Theatre (Friday-Saturday)
The San Francisco nonprofit company, which specializes in presenting classical theater pieces through a queer lens, will focus on the familial relationships of England’s King Henry IV.
Shows take place at the Eclectic Box, a Valencia Street performing-arts theater. Tickets can be purchased online, ranging in price from $23.02 with fees to $54.22 with fees. Plays start both days at 7 p.m., with guests encouraged to be in their seats 15 minutes before showtime.
Record swap at Make Out Room (Saturday)
The 22nd Street nightclub is bringing together 12 Bay Area music vendors and countless buyers for a day of shopping for holiday vinyl records. The event is free to attend, with Make-Out room having drink specials throughout the afternoon.

‘Spirits of Fall’ presented by Bay Beats (Saturday)
The San Francisco Public Library’s music-streaming service is hosting its first-ever show dedicated to the goth subculture. Saturday’s concert features the musical acts Yama Uba and Godgifu.
The free show takes place at the Koret Auditorium in the San Francisco Main Library from 1 to 3 p.m.
Launch of Gray Area’s monthly book club (Sunday)
The Mission Street performing-arts theater hosts Cybersentics, an all-ages social reading group that explores the human brain’s capabilities through art and technology. This month’s read is “Brainmedia: One Hundred Years of Performing Live Brains, 1920-2020” by Flora Lysen.
The club is free to attend and runs from noon to 2 p.m. Gray Area is located at 2665 Mission St.
ODC Theater film screening (Sunday)
The 17th Street performing-arts theater celebrates the 20th anniversary of two of choreographer Miguel Gutierrez’s works, “Retrospective Exhibitionist” and “Difficult Bodies.” In the former, Gutierrez uses props to explore the passage of time for performers when they are being watched by others. The latter involves three women moving in a group, with Gutierrez creating the live music that loops throughout their performance.

Holiday chocolate salon in Golden Gate Park (Sunday)
The San Francisco County Fair Building welcomes over 30 chocolatiers and confectioners for an event at which participants can sample and purchase premium treats.
Tickets can be purchased online, ranging in price from $13.07 with fees for children between ages 6 and 12 to $21.99 with fees for adults. Sunday’s event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is being held at 1199 9th Ave.
Pickwick Vintage Show (Sunday)
Twice a month, more than 40 vendors gather at the Ferry Building’s mezzanine for the Pickwick Vintage Show, a market featuring assortments of vintage clothing, accessories and jewelry.
General-admission tickets can be purchased online, costing $11.54 with fees. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
