Jim Hall, owner of Point Loma’s La Playa Books, dies
Jim Hall, owner of La Playa Books in Point Loma, died Oct. 27, the store announced.
Hall, born in San Diego in 1934, was a history and philosophy buff who served as an officer in the Navy, an attorney and a secretary of health and welfare in California, the store said.
“He loved his bookstore very much,” La Playa Books stated in a social media post. “Some of his last words were ‘Open the store!’ He was comforted in his dying to know that the open sign was on, the flag was out and neighbors in Point Loma were heading in to buy a book.”
“He traveled the world, a mentor to many,” the post added. “We have lost our foundation, friend, father and guide.”
La Playa Books, at 1026 Rosecrans St., opened in October 2016, when Hall was 82. It sells new, used and rare books, along with cards and gifts.
The Boatyard restaurant eyes summer opening on Shelter Island
The long-planned Boatyard restaurant at the former Fiddler’s Green site on Shelter Island is preparing to open in the summer under General Manager Chris Wood and executive chef Jason McLeod.
The original cedar lumber from the old Fiddler’s Green restaurant has been repurposed, and engineers confirmed the building can support a 1,500-square-foot top-floor expansion without costly reinforcements, according to a report by SanDiegoVille.
The Boatyard, which originally was planned to open this year, will serve wood-fired steak and seafood and feature a hidden speakeasy behind a harborside entrance at 2760 Shelter Island Drive. For more information, visit theboatyardsandiego.com.
