Sacramento video game and collectibles store suffers major theft

A break-in at a store in Sacramento resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in losses as a suspect smashed cases and stole video games and collectible cards.Officials said 1UP Retro Video Games, located on 23rd and J streets, was burglarized early Monday.”They also came through and ripped open the backs of the card cases to get into them, stole all the cards out of there, all the sealed boxes, and stuff that was on the back shelf as well, and broke our window in the back,” said Travis Boune, the store owner.Surveillance video captured a man smashing cases and grabbing video games and collectible cards. Sacramento police have not made arrests, and while Boune waits for answers, he is convinced this wasn’t random. “The way they came in is not a way that someone would have just guessed to get in, and then the things that they took seemed pretty specific,” Boune said.Despite the hit, Boune said the gaming and card communities are locked in and looking out. “We do have a big group chat that has pretty much all of the video game and card shops in Sacramento and the Bay Area, so anytime something happens, we all share what happened, here’s if we have any video or footage, and items that will be easy to spot, that way if someone decides to take it to the store and sell it, they will be able to find out,” Boune said.Boune said the suspect also left some clues behind.”When the person broke in, they put their hand on the back there, and they left some really clean fingerprints on the inside,” he said.The small business also started a GoFundMe to help recoup some of the losses.
