SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday vetoed a union-backed bill aimed at creating more clean energy jobs in California.

What happened: SB 787 by state Sen. Jerry McNerney would have formalized partnerships between state agencies, labor and environmental groups to develop the state’s supply chain for the electric vehicle battery, offshore wind and heat pump industries.

The bill would have required the California Energy Commission to create a senior counselor on industrial policy and clean energy development who would serve as the point of contact for companies siting production facilities in the state and consider policies to stimulate supply chains.

The bill would have also required the CEC, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, Labor and Workforce Development Agency, California Public Utilities Commission, Department of General Services and Office of the Treasurer to enter into a memorandum of understanding to develop strategies for establishing clean-energy facilities in the state.
