1. LA economic and tourism leaders announce ‘LA is Open’ campaign

Amid efforts to boost the local economy in the Los Angeles region, officials Monday announced the “LA is Open” initiative, a so-called “recovery campaign” aimed at promoting the tourism industry and supporting small businesses impacted by January’s fires.

“LA is Open” is intended to signal that Los Angeles is open for business, resilient and ready to welcome visitors from around the world, according to officials.

The initiative is an overarching campaign linking and showcasing other programs with the same goal such as Shop LA, Dine LA and Discover LA.

“Through this bold new campaign, we are sending a clear message that Los Angeles is open for business and ready to welcome everyone back to LA to explore all that our vibrant city has to offer,” Bass said in a statement.

2. Cal State LA program using higher education to prevent recidivism in state prisons

California State University, Los Angeles, launched its Prison Graduation Initiative in 2016, becoming the first public university in the state to offer bachelor’s degrees to incarcerated people.

The program has since expanded to other prisons, and most recently to the California Institution for Women in Chino in 2023.

So far over 70 students have completed their degrees, and none who have gone through the program have reoffended.

The prison education program is designed to graduate students in two years.

3. Trump adminstration could open the California coast to oil drilling; Newsom says it’s ‘dead on arrival’

Since President Donald Trump took office in January, he’s rolled back green energy policies in favor of fossil fuel production. His signature tax and spending law, signed over the summer, mandated three dozen new oil and gas leases in federal waters of the Gulf and Alaska.

And now the administration appears poised to open up drilling leases off the coast of California for the first time in decades.

The plan, which was first reported by the Washington Post, will be announced in the coming weeks, with the Interior Department telling Spectrum News it plans to propose a five-year plan for oil and gas leases on the outer continental shelf by the end of the year.
