LAUSD Board renews school charters
East L.A. & Silver Lake—The LAUSD Board of Education on Monday approved the charter renewal petitions of Extera Public School No. 2 in East L.A. and Camino Nuevo Charter Academy’s Dalzell Lance High School in Silver Lake, along with 20 other renewal petitions from across the district. The vote was taken at a special board meeting.
STEM Day Draws 450 Students to Cal State LA
EL Sereno—Cal State LA hosted more than 450 middle and high school students for its 21st Annual MESA STEM Day on Nov. 8. Sponsored by ECST and the MESA program, the event featured hands-on STEM activities, campus tours, and aerospace demonstrations led by longtime partner Boeing to inspire future engineers and scientists.
Community teams watch for immigration agents near schools
Teams of parents and teachers have established teams that monitor the streets surrounding Eastside schools, looking out for the presence of federal immigration agents, Boyle Heights Beat reported. Some of the parents are undocumented residents of the community, but they are participating in the teams that are trying to reduce students’ and families’ fear of immigration raids.
Judge lets lawsuit over LAUSD’s use of arts funds move forward
A judge denied LAUSD’s bid to dismiss a lawsuit accusing the district of misusing millions intended for arts and music education, the L.A. Daily News reported. Filed by former superintendent and mayoral candidate Austin Beutner and several families, the suit claims LAUSD used new Proposition 28 funds—about $800 million to $1 billion annually—to pay existing arts teachers instead of hiring more. The district says it has complied with the law and values arts and music programs.
Settlement reached in abuse allegations
Highland Park—A former Franklin High School student settled his lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by an L.A.’s Best supervisor in the early 2000s, ending the trial. He says LAUSD enabled the misconduct and caused lasting trauma. The Eastsider
