California and 14 other states form the Governors’ Public Health Alliance to coordinate science-driven guidance and protect communities from political interference.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Governor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that California is joining 14 other governors to form the Governors’ Public Health Alliance, a non-partisan coalition aimed at protecting public health from political interference and ensuring science-based guidance drives decision-making.

The alliance will serve as a centralized hub for state leaders to coordinate emergency preparedness, share data and expertise, improve public communication, and respond quickly and consistently to emerging health threats.

Participating governors include leaders from Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Connecticut, Guam, Rhode Island, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, and North Carolina.

“California is proud to help launch this new alliance because the American people deserve a public health system that puts science before politics,” Governor Newsom said. “As extremists try to weaponize the CDC and spread misinformation, we’re stepping up to coordinate across states, protect communities, and ensure decisions are driven by data, facts, and the health of the American people.”

The launch comes amid growing concerns over federal misguidance on vaccine safety and healthcare access under previous policies.

The Governors’ Public Health Alliance aims to bridge the leadership gap by uniting state leaders and public health experts to safeguard Americans from disease and injury.

The alliance builds on California’s regional initiatives, such as the West Coast Health Alliance, and will offer a platform for collaboration, sharing best practices, and addressing common public health challenges.

The Governors’ Public Health Alliance is supported by GovAct, a nonpartisan nonprofit that helps governors safeguard fundamental freedoms, including public health.

The alliance will also be guided by GovAct’s Bipartisan Advisory Board, which includes former governors Arne Carlson (R), Jim Doyle (D), Deval Patrick (D), Marc Racicot (R), Kathleen Sebelius (D), Bill Weld (R), and former senior federal officials Sally Yates and Larry Thompson.

Through this new coalition, state leaders aim to enhance national public health leadership and ensure that decisions prioritize data, science, and the well-being of communities nationwide.
