BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The Bakersfield City Council unanimously approved an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on Wednesday for the proposed Tortuga Bay Waterpark in northwest Bakersfield.

The decision followed Council Member Larry Koman’s request for further discussion after pulling the item from the consent calendar.

Tortuga Bay, the company behind the project, plans to reimburse the city approximately $200,000 for the report’s cost.

The contract going before the council Wednesday evening details that Tortuga Bay Waterpark, LLC., has applied for a General Plan Amendment to allow development on the southeast corner of Hageman Road and Mohawk Street (KBAK/KBFX).{p}{/p}The contract going before the council Wednesday evening details that Tortuga Bay Waterpark, LLC., has applied for a General Plan Amendment to allow development on the southeast corner of Hageman Road and Mohawk Street (KBAK/KBFX).

Despite the approval, city officials caution that the project is still in its early stages and there is no guarantee it will be built.

The City of Bakersfield website states in part that an EIR analyzes the significant environmental effects of a proposed project, to identify alternatives, and to disclose possible ways to reduce or avoid the possible environmental damage.

In a written statement, Councilmember Andrae Gonzales expressed support for the project but reiterated that nothing is final.
