Opera San José has partnered with Cloud4Wi to introduce a new interactive audience experience, using enterprise WiFi-based technology to engage patrons in real time.

The project aims to expand the traditional performance model by allowing audiences to influence the outcome of a live production. The initiative debuted during the company’s run of Mozart’s “Così fan tutte,” allowing patrons to vote during intermission on how the opera would end, choosing whether the lovers would reunite, change partners, or pursue other outcomes. Cloud4Wi supported real-time participation by transforming the venue’s WiFi network into a patron engagement system; audience members logging into WiFi received personalized emails with a direct survey link, and on-site tablets were provided to ensure broader access.

“We were the perfect spot to uplift a 236-year-old opera with Cloud4Wi’s next-gen technology,” said General Director and CEO Shawna Lucey per an official press release. “This project delighted our patrons, turning their viewing experience into an interactive, immersive event where the audience gained real agency in the artistic creation.”

The collaboration produced strong engagement metrics: 36 percent of attendees used the venue’s WiFi, 51 percent participated in the ending vote, and 84 percent of logged-in patrons opted in to future marketing communications.
