Prosecutor offers guidance to Oakland County schools on how to handle ICE activity

  • November 22, 2025

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – The Oakland County prosecutor offered guidance to schools on how to handle Immigration enforcement activities.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald released an advisory guidance on Friday, Nov. 21, regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at local school districts.

Her advisory guidance comes after some local schools went into lockdown on Nov. 19 after ICE and law enforcement were looking for suspects in the area of Sashabaw and Clarkston roads. The lockdown lasted for a few hours.

“We need to remind our students and ourselves that everyone has basic constitutional rights, including the right to be free from unlawful arrest, regardless of their immigration status,” said McDonald. “As we inform our students, teachers, and families, we must emphasize that no one should ever interfere with ICE or law enforcement. Doing so increases the risk for everyone.”

McDonald provided steps that she said schools and families can take if they encounter ICE. Those steps include ensuring security cameras are recording any enforcement activity, not to interfere with ICE and ensuring schools have the correct emergency contact information.

“Working together, schools and families can take steps to preserve our schools as safe places where students can learn without fear,” said McDonald.

Here are the steps McDonald provided to school staff and families:
