(FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of a man who died in custody at the San Diego Central Jail over the weekend.

On Thursday, SDSO identified the man as 44-year-old Brandon Pleffner. Pleffner had been in SDSO custody since Nov. 8 and was facing charges for shoplifting with priors, according to the department.

He was discovered unresponsive inside his cell on Sunday, Nov. 16, around 7 p.m. while deputies at the jail were performing routine duties.

Upon seeing him unresponsive, deputies immediately activated 9-1-1 and requested assistance from the jail’s medical staff in addition to performing life-saving measures.

Paramedics and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department continued life-saving measures when they arrived. Despite efforts to save his life, Pleffner was pronounced dead at around 7:35 a.m.

“The San Diego Sheriff’s Office extends our sympathies to the Pleffner family and all those affected by his passing,” SDSO stated.

The department added that a Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will continue to support Pleffner’s family.
