The city of Fresno has moved forward with new enforcement measures for street vendors in the Tower District, following growing concerns about health and safety.

City leaders said the new ordinance is designed to address issues of improper food handling and waste disposal.

The rules permit the city to penalize vendors who fail to comply with safety regulations.

The first violation is a written warning.

Additional violations bring fines ranging from 25 to 500 dollars.

Some people worry the fees could hurt the tower districts’ nightlife and make it harder for families who depend on street vending to make a living.

An earlier version of the ordinance would have banned vendors on the weekends, but that proposal was pulled after community opposition.

The new ordinance is set to take effect in 30 days.
