San Diego FC is playing a team-focused style that is anchored by their captain, Jeppe Tverskov.
The success of San Diego FC in its inaugural season cannot be discussed enough.
Phenomenal play from a young franchise in its first season is not a common thing in the MLS.
Chemistry is huge for the franchise, as the squad plays as like they’ve played together for years. In constructing the roster, Tyler Heaps, the San Diego FC General Manager., did well to gather a group of men who enjoy the company of one another. The results in the field are from this bond.

The captain of San Diego FC is Danish midfielder Jeppe Tverskov.
With names like Chucky Lozano and Anders Dreyer on the roster, coach Mikey Varas went with the lesser-known Tverskov. His decision was based on cohesion and awarding a player who would bring the men together. A player who would unite the many nations that represent the SDFC roster. Tverskov is that man, and his play on the field is turning heads in the league.
Jeppe Tverskov leads all of MLS in touches with 2,839 during the season, starting each game since joining the team. He was named to the MLS All-Star team in his first season in the league. The offense goes through the captain as he controls the pace of the match adequately.
Tverskov is described as a leader in every facet. The way he plays and trains are vital to his success. However, it is his off-field stuff that really stands out. “I think that through his actions and the way he plays, how he is in the locker room, how he trains, and how he is in the community, he’s a role model for who we are as San Diego,” head coach Mikey Varas recently said in Spanish to the local media.
The 32-year-old Danish international player is new to San Diego but really enjoying his time in the city. “I have a little daughter, a three-year-old, I have another one on the way, so it’s like, we’ve seen all the playgrounds, first of all. And then we go to coffee shops, we go to cafes, all around the city. We try to see as much of the city as possible,” Tverskov said when asked about San Diego.
In October, Jeppe Tverskov signed a contract extension through the 2027 season, with a club option through 2028. “I’m happy, I feel like I have had a good season here and feel like the Club has also been happy with me,” Tverskov said after the extension. “As soon as we started talking a little bit about it, it made good sense for both parties, so it wasn’t difficult for either of us, so I’m happy and we’re happy. So, everyone’s happy.”
Anibal Godoy, a Panamanian defensive midfielder is a senior member of the team and arguably one of the most respected on the squad. When he talks, people listen. Godoy spoke about Tverskov after the extension and echoed the sentiment of the whole team. “Truly very happy (for him), he deserves it. I believe that he has been, not only as a player, but also as a captain, a fundamental part of the team, and hopefully he stays here for many years,” said Godoy in Spanish about Tverskov.
He will remain with the team for the next two seasons, with a possibility for a third. Given his age, it will likely be the tail end of his playing career. But San Diego is getting the play of a man in the prime of his career. Tverskov is rejuvenated in San Diego and in the MLS. It is an exciting time for the franchise and the league in general as they continue to add relevant players from around the globe.
