Here are the three takeaways from Saturday’s 3-2 OT victory:
The Wright birthday gift
Speed, speed, and speed! That’s the first element you notice in Jared Wright’s game. It’s a weapon in open ice, on the forecheck, and on the backcheck, leading to him being a 200-foot player and an effective penalty killer.
Having Wright on the ice in overtime is a great option, given the open ice and his speed, for head coach Andrew Lord. And, of course, it was Wright’s speed in overtime that ended the game.
Condors forward Seth Griffith lost the puck at center ice, and Wright, like he did the previous night on a breakaway attempt, used his blazing speed to gain separation from a Condors defender and went glove side high on Matt Tomkins to call game. It was the second straight game his goal wound up being a game-winner.
It’s his birthday but he gave us a gift

Not only was it a game-winning goal for Wright, but it was his 23rd birthday! Not a bad birthday gift, huh?
Another hot stretch incoming for Ward?
Taylor Ward led the Reign in goals with eight entering the game. That total went up by one with his second-period tally to put the Reign on the board, giving him his ninth goal of the season. Ward has scored in bunches this season. In fact, he’s either been hot or cold (streaky).
Ward didn’t record a single point and had a -1 rating in Ontario’s first four games. Then, he proceeded to score six goals in the next six games, followed by one goal in the next five games, and now has goals in back-to-back games.

If history repeats itself, we could see another one of those hot streaks for Ward.
How sweep it is
Sweep!
The Reign came into the weekend tied with Bakersfield in the standings and took both games with a pair of 3-2 victories, with the latest one in overtime. The Reign played well for 57 minutes on Friday night until the Condors put a scare in their hearts in the final three minutes to make it a 3-2 game after Ontario comfortably led 3-0.
It was different in this game. The Reign didn’t necessarily play badly, but found themselves down 2-0 after 20 minutes. The final 43 minutes were all Ontario. They dictated the pace and limited the Condors to only eight shots on goal. It was a solid team game and 60+ minutes. All in all, a good weekend of hockey for the Reign heading into Thanksgiving.
NOTES:
*Cole Guttman scored his third goal of the season. It came during 4v4, the second 4v4 goal scored by the Reign this season.

*Jared Wright leads all Reign rookie skaters with five. He is second on the team in +/- with a +11 rating.
*Defenseman Otto Salin recorded two shots on goal and was very active below the hash marks in the offensive zone.
*Isaiah Saville made his first start with the Reign and stopped 15 of 17 shots to earn the victory.
Did someone say tonight is Saville’s Reign debut?😍 #ReignTrain I #ONTvsBAK pic.twitter.com/NNLZcvHbsg

*The Reign’s power play went 1-for-12 (8.3%) this weekend against Bakersfield. That needs to improve. Their penalty kill was 5-for-6 (83.3%) on the weekend and has killed off the last 18 of 20 (90%) opposing power plays.
*The Reign’s win gave Bakersfield its first loss on home ice.

*Martin Chromiak left the game in the third period after being on the receiving end of a huge hit from Josh Samanski that drew blood from his facial/mouth area. There was nothing malicious about the hit. In fact, it was actually clean. Chromiak had his stick up in the air around his facial area when he was hit, potentially leading to the blood.
UP NEXT: The Ontario Reign return to game action on Friday, November 28th, at home against the Henderson Silver Knights. The puck drops at 7 PM PST and can be seen on FloHockey and KCAL+ (channel 9.6). You can also listen to the game on the Ontario Reign radio network or the ESPN LA app. Happy Thanksgiving!
