SMF expects passenger volumes to surpass last year’s levels as holiday travel picks up, with more flights and new dining options.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is preparing for a busy holiday travel season, with airport officials expecting passenger volumes to exceed last year’s numbers from Thanksgiving through the New Year.

Airport officials say hundreds of thousands of travelers will pass through SMF over the next several weeks.

The busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving period is projected to be Sunday, Nov. 30.

For the winter holidays, SMF is anticipating even heavier traffic. Between Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, the airport will offer 30% more seats compared to the same week in 2024, a boost that could bring significantly more travelers through the terminals.

“We know how important these trips are for our passengers,” said Sheri Thompson-Duarte, Deputy Director of Airport Operations and Public Safety for the Sacramento County Department of Airports. “We’re ready for a safe, efficient and festive holiday season, and we encourage travelers to plan ahead so they can start their journeys stress-free.”

SMF has added several new food and beverage options ahead of the holiday rush.

Sidewalk Juice and West Coast Sourdough are now open in both terminals, serving freshly made sandwiches, soups and smoothies.

Terminal A has welcomed Golden Grove Market along with a new Starbucks location.

Airport officials are encouraging travelers to prepare early and keep these guidelines in mind:

Arrive early: At least 2.5 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights to allow time for parking, check-in and security.

Check parking availability: The parking garage and daily lot often fill up during busy morning peaks. Officials recommend using the Economy lot and taking the shuttle to the terminals. Real-time parking information is available on the airport website.

Use the free waiting lot: Drivers picking up passengers can avoid curb congestion by using the airport’s free cell phone waiting area.

Pack smart: Travelers should review TSA guidelines, especially when bringing liquids or food gifts in carry-on bags.
