A crash on U.S. 50 east of Camp Sacramento Sunday evening left one person dead and several others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at around 7:17 p.m. when a white Ford F-250 towing a 32-foot fifth-wheel travel trailer was traveling westbound.
CHP reported that the Ford was moving at an unsafe speed as it entered a curve, causing the driver to lose control of the trailer.
The trailer crossed over the centerline and into the path of an eastbound Jeep Compass, which the driver was unable to avoid. The left side and top of the trailer struck the front of the Jeep, causing major damage to both vehicles.
All five occupants of the Jeep, all from Woodland, were injured in the crash. One passenger, sitting on the right front side of the car, an 18-year-old, died at the scene. A 16-year-old sustained major injuries, a 6-year-old sustained moderate injuries, and a 13-year-old and a 37-year-old suffered minor injuries. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The California Highway Patrol said the cause of the crash and the full sequence of events remain under investigation.
Following the crash, U.S. 50 was temporarily closed before a one-way traffic control was put in place.Â
CHP is asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Officer Heitzman at the South Lake Tahoe CHP Office at (530) 539-9500.
