A 33-year-old man who was being held at Santa Clara County’s Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas died on Sunday afternoon.
The man was allegedly found unresponsive in his housing unit at about 2:56 p.m., according to a news release from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
Milpitas firefighters and medical personnel arrived at about 3:09 p.m. and began first aid. The man was declared dead at 3:31 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release the man’s identity or say why he was being held but said he was booked on Feb. 14 for several allegations related from the San Jose Police Department.
There did not appear to be signs of violence, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office, Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner will investigate the death in accordance with in-custody death protocol, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The men’s jail has a capacity of 2,093 medium and minimum-security inmates. There are housing units of different shapes and sizes, some with direct supervision and others with indirect supervision, according to the jail’s website.
