Did you know that you can get to Bishop, California in just over an hour from San Francisco? Each winter, United Airlines runs limited-time direct flights that take you to the foot of the Sierra Nevada in no time.

Between its mild, sunny climate and proximity to the best snow in the state, Bishop makes for an underrated winter escape from the Bay Area.

The small town of Bishop is situated in a sunny valley at the base of the mountains. Despite its alpine location, it actually receives about 335 days of sunshine per year, with average winter highs reaching about 50-60°F. The town itself also experiences limited snowfall, so it’s easy to get around even when nearby areas are snowed in.

As for the surrounding mountains, they are known to receive heavy snowfall, making for gorgeous views and endless winter recreation.

United Airlines currently lists direct flights starting on December 11th and lasting through February.

Between the milder weather in Bishop itself and the higher-elevation winter recreation available nearby, visitors can enjoy a full range of winter activities.

At lower elevations, winter is still a great time to enjoy scenic hiking at Gem Lakes Trail or Pine Creek Crags. Anglers can take advantage of world-class fly fishing in the Lower Owens River and Pleasant Valley Reservoir. You can even take a dip in the water at Keough’s Ditch hot spring.

If it’s the snow you seek, it only takes about 45 minutes to reach Mammoth Mountain, one of California’s best skiing and snowboarding destinations. Snowshoers and cross-country skiers often head to hiking areas like South Lake Road, Lake Sabrina, and North Lake.

And of course, if you’re staying in town, you’ll find a charming lineup of seasonal events on the calendar. Look out for the lively Lighted Christmas Parade on Dec. 6, the Laws Railroad Express day on Dec. 13, and the Sage to Summit Winter Race Series on Dec. 13 and Jan. 10.
