Sacramento Loaves and Fishes is asking the community for pie donations to complete their Thanksgiving meal for those in need, after meeting their turkey goal to prepare 1,000 meals.”We’re seeing a lot more guests that are coming to us in need. I know that the number of Maryhouse are higher. The number at Mustard Seed is up,” said Shannon Dominguez Stevens from Sacramento Loaves and Fishes. Last week, the nonprofit issued an urgent call for help to meet their turkey goal and prepare 1,000 meals for Thanksgiving. “Every year, there are things that we need in smaller quantities. This year, we found that we needed quite a few more turkeys when we were looking at our inventory on Friday. I think everybody is struggling and we see that, but the community is still showing up for us,” Stevens said.Chef Edwin Burton, who has been with the organization for 25 years, noted the increase in demand. “It’s picking up a lot more and you can see that people are coming out to eat,” Burton said. “Times are hard.”Stevens emphasized that the annual Thanksgiving meal is about more than just a warm plate. “We know that the holidays tend to be triggering. It’s more of a struggle. One, the weather is bad, but also, it’s a reminder in some cases of what they don’t have,” Stevens said. For Sandra, who receives meals at Loaves and Fishes, this time of year highlights her gratitude. “Very thankful this year. I have a lot to be thankful for,” she said. “I have a home now and I live across the street and I still come out here and I talk to everybody and I understand everybody.” As preparations ramp up, Sandra is one of hundreds who will enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal. “They’re good cooks here.. no, really, they are and this is why I come. Somebody knows how to cook here,” she said.Loaves and Fishes says they are grateful to have met their turkey minimums, but they are not in the clear yet. The big ask now is for pies, as they still need either 50 large pies or 100 standard-sized pies to ensure everyone coming through gets a complete holiday meal. Pie donations will be accepted Tuesday starting at 7 a.m.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
