The Grateful Dead will forever be associated with San Francisco, the epicenter of the ’60s hippie movement in which the band did indeed play a prominent role during its less-than-two-year stay at 710 Ashbury St.

But the first official Grateful Dead show was actually performed some 65 miles south of Haight Ashbury in San Jose on Dec. 4, 1965. It’s a relatively little-known fact, which isn’t all that surprising given the amount of times that this legendary psychedelic rock group — which was actually born in the Palo Alto/Menlo Park area — has been marketed as a “San Francisco band.”

Australian Senator Pauline Hanson barred from Parliament for wearing burqa in protest

An Australian senator has been barred from Parliament for the rest of the year for wearing a burqa in the chamber. Pauline Hanson, leader of the One Nation party, wore the garment Monday to protest the Senate’s refusal to consider her bill banning burqas in public. Senators suspended her for the day, and on Tuesday, passed a censure motion. This penalty bars her from seven consecutive Senate sitting days. Hanson argues her actions highlight hypocrisy, as there is no dress code in the Senate. Critics say Hanson’s actions mock and vilify Muslims.

The upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Lebanon has rekindled a glimmer of hope for many in the small, crisis-battered country. The visit, part of the pope’s first official foreign trip, is seen as a message of support for Lebanon. Since 2019, the country has been battered by political unrest, the collapse of its currency and banking system, the port explosion and, most recently, a war between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group. To many Lebanese, it feel like divine intervention is the only solution for their country.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government has accused Pakistan of launching overnight airstrikes in three eastern provinces, killing 10 civilians. The government’s chief spokesperson has posted on X Tuesday that Pakistan “bombed” the home of a civilian in Khost province, killing nine children and a woman. He said additional strikes were carried out in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika, injuring four others. Pakistan’s military and government did not immediately comment on the allegation, which comes more than a month after cross-border clashes erupted when the Afghan government claimed Pakistani drone strikes hit Kabul.

Britain’s Labour Party government is set to deliver a high-stakes budget aimed at fixing public finances and boosting economic growth. It’s a tough task. Inflation remains high, borrowing is up, and the economy is sluggish. Treasury chief Rachel Reeves faces limited options, with tax increases as the main revenue-raising measure. The government did the same last year, in what it billed as a one-off set of tax hikes. Critics warn more taxes could harm growth, while many Labour members worry about the party’s deep unpopularity. A misfiring budget could add to pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer from those in his party who fear a big defeat in the next election.

China has launched the Shenzhou 22 spacecraft to help bring back a team of astronauts after a damaged spacecraft left them temporarily stranded on China’s space station. The Shenzhou 22 will be used sometime in 2026 by the three astronauts who docked on the Tiangong space station on Nov. 1. Earlier this month, another group of Chinese astronauts faced a nine-day delay in their return to Earth after their craft’s window was damaged. They eventually returned using the Shenzhou 21 spacecraft, which had just carried the replacement crew to Tiangong. While the three-person crew landed safely back on Earth, three of their fellow astronauts on the replacement crew were temporarily left without a guaranteed way to return in case of an emergency.

An increasing number of farm animal sanctuaries across the country have started promoting an alternative version of Thanksgiving. Rather than dipping turkeys into gravy, families “adopt” them, donating money to their lifelong care. In return they receive photos, certificates and sometimes one-on-one visits with the birds. At Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, a $25 donation comes with a certificate, photo and either a virtual or in-person visit. The funds help pay for extending the turkeys’ outdoor pasture area, their feed and sometimes their pricey vet bills. The sanctuary says the program is about educating the public that turkeys are more than just centerpieces.

Asian shares are mixed after U.S. stocks rallied. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index edged higher after reopening from a holiday. On Monday, the S&P 500 climbed 1.5% in one of its best days since the summer. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 2.7%. Stocks got a lift from rising hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut its main interest rate again in December, which could boost the economy and investment prices. The market also benefited from strength for stocks caught up in the artificial-intelligence frenzy, particularly for Alphabet. Trading this week will be shortened by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Part of a scenic road loop in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park is reopening after being closed for over six years. The road encircles the rugged Badlands where the 26th president roamed as a young man in the 1880s. A section of roadway slumped because of erosion in spring 2019, eventually leading 6 miles of roadway to close. Since then, visitors have had to turn around at a certain point, unable to see views such as Scoria Point Overlook, a vista of red rock and rolling hills. A $51 million project reconstructed the segment over two and a half years.

Oregon's governor declares emergency to ensure the state gets enough fuel after pipeline leak

Oregon’s governor has declared a state of emergency to ensure fuel supplies continue despite the shutdown of the Olympic Pipeline due to a leak. The pipeline supplies 90% of the state’s fuel. The declaration Monday streamlines fuel delivery by barges and trucks, partly by waiving certain regulations on commercial drivers’ operating hours. The leak was discovered a week ago in Washington. Crews are working around the clock to fix it. Oregon officials say they don’t expect a fuel shortage, but prices might rise. In Washington, the shutdown is starting to affect air travel in Seattle, causing some flight delays.

3D-printed guns FBI boss Kash Patel gifted to New Zealand officials were toy-inspired revolvers

Inoperable pistols gifted by FBI Director Kash Patel to senior New Zealand security officials, who had to relinquish them for destruction because they were illegal to possess, were revolvers inspired by toy Nerf guns and popular among amateur 3D-printed weapons hobbyists, documents obtained by The Associated Press show. The pistols, modeled after toy Nerf guns, were illegal under New Zealand law and had to be destroyed after Patel’s visit to Wellington in July. Documents obtained by The Associated Press show the model as the Maverick PG22. New Zealand’s strict gun laws treat 3D-printed weapons the same as other firearms.

Art Briles hired by Eastern New Mexico, 9 years after Baylor fired him amid scandal

Art Briles was hired as football coach at Eastern New Mexico on Monday, getting his first college head coaching job since Baylor fired the two-time Big 12 champion more than nine years ago amid a sexual assault scandal at the world’s largest Baptist university.  An NCAA infractions report five years later ripped him for failing to look into horrific and potentially criminal allegations against his players, but he wasn’t found guilty of any NCAA violations. Briles turns 70 next month. He was offensive coordinator at Grambling State for less than a week in 2022, and Southern Miss administrators vetoed an attempt to hire Briles as OC. Eastern New Mexico, an NCAA Division II school, fired Kelley Lee after consecutive 3-8 seasons.

Russia has launched a wave of attacks on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, striking residential buildings and energy infrastructure. Local authorities said a residential building in the eastern district of Dniprovskyi was badly damaged and at least four people were injured. The attacks Tuesday morning followed talks between U.S. and Ukraine representatives in Geneva on Sunday about a U.S.-Russia brokered peace plan.

The development process in the NFL for a quarterback learning the most demanding and difficult job in sports can test the patience of the entire organization. The challenge of breaking in J.J. McCarthy that the Minnesota Vikings are in the thick of this season has been creating all kinds of cracks in their foundation for success. Their defense has rarely had leads to play with and force opponents into turnovers. The persistent double-digit-point deficits the offense is facing has forced McCarthy into drop-back mode too often. The Vikings lost 23-6 at Green Bay on Sunday and fell to 4-7.
