According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving sees more than three times the daily average number of cooking fires, making it a busy day for first responders.
“Kitchen fires are typically what we respond to,” said Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Capt. Justin Sylvia. “Because people are having a lot of folks over, they may have not cleaned their oven. So we typically see it in the kitchen, but we do see these frying accidents happen. A lot of times in garages, people think that it’s safe to do this in your garage.”
Sylvia adds that oil spills can cause a fireball strong enough to burn a garage and potentially spread to the rest of a home.
