The Business Journal published its updated list of the region’s top Hospital Charity Care contributors on Nov. 14, 2025. 

Medical centers across the Central Valley provide charity care to families and individuals who are unable to afford medical treatment.

Hospital staff encourage those in need to apply for this financial assistance. Patients who have little to no insurance, and high out-of-pocket costs, may be eligible.

The information presented in the list reflects data reported to the state from facilities in Fresno, Kings, Madera and Tulare counties, ranked by the amount of patient medical bills written off between Jan. 1, 2024 and Dec. 31, 2024.

Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno ranked first on the list.

CMC provided $94.07 million in charity care and reported $64.9 million in unpaid medical bills in 2024. 

The center discharged 547 indigent inpatients during this period.

Of CMC’s 307,008 total outpatient visits, 27,165 of those receiving care were unable to pay the bill.

Second on the list — Clovis Community Medical Center.

Clovis Community Medical Center’s provided $20.79 million and reported a sum of $26.27 million in unpaid patient medical bills last year.

Some 65 of a total of 38,107 of discharged inpatients were indigent.

Patients in need made up 27,165 of the center’s 307,008 total outpatient visits during this period.

Kaweah Health Medical Center in Visalia ranked third.

The Visalia-based medical center provided $17.15 million in charity care in 2024.

There were 23,885 inpatients discharged from the center that year, and 150 of those patients indigent.

Kaweah Health reported 610,263 total outpatient visits, with 4,398 patients requiring the financial assistance.

Saint Agnes Medical Center (SAMC) in Fresno came in fourth. 

Up from fifth on the previous list, the Clovis-based medical center provided $11.83 million in charity care.

There were $5.62 million in unpaid medical bills reported by Saint Agnes in 2024.

The center discharged 33 indigent inpatients. Making up 0.1% of the 25,436 total patient discharges during this period.

SAMC saw 170,429 outpatients in 2024 — of them, 248 were in need of financial assistance.

Kaiser Permanente Fresno was fifth on the list.

The Oakland-based provider $10.33 million of charity care at its Fresno location in 2024. The medical center reported a sum of $56,039 in unpaid medical bills that same year.

None of its 8,049 total discharged inpatients were reported as indigent. The also reported no indigent outpatient visits out of 287,215 total outpatient visits in 2024.
